What the law is now

The CourtListener feed surfaced a Supreme Court matter captioned *Trump v. Slaughter*, filed 2026-06-29, concerning the removal of an FTC commissioner. The case is a vehicle for the recurring separation-of-powers question of whether the President may remove members of a multimember independent commission at will, notwithstanding the for-cause removal protection that *Humphrey's Executor v. United States*, 295 U.S. 602 (1935), has long been read to supply for the FTC.
